Yoko Tawada was born in Tokyo in 1960. She studied literature in Tokyo, Zürich and Hamburg. In 1982 she moved to Germany in 1982 and lived in Hamburg for more than twenty years. Since 2006 she is living in Berlin.
She writes in both Japanese and German, her work is published in Germany as well as in Japan. For her writing she has received numerous awards, including the Adelbert-von- Chamisso-Preis (1996), the Tanizaki-Preis (2003), the Goethe-Medaille (2005) and the Noma-Bungei-Preis (2011). Her latest book is Fremde Wasser which came out in 2012. Yoko Tawada is a fellow of the German Academy for Language and Literature.
